Beginning in August 2008, we will be working with Primeros Pasos, a clinic just outside of Quetzaltenango ("Xela"), in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Primeros Pasos, which opened in 2002, provides a variety of services to the rural population of the Palajunoj Valley, with a special focus on meeting the medical needs of the Valley's Mayan children.
Jimmy will be seeing patients, doing laboratory analysis, and undertaking a medical systems and quality review of the clinic. Kelsey will be the clinic's development coordinator, focusing on grant-writing and other fund-raising efforts, and will also contribute to the community education programming. Together, we will also be investigating potential sites for another clinic based on the Primeros Pasos model (which provides services to between 5,000 and 6,000 patients annually on a budget of $30,000).
