Visiting Semuc Champey, a natural limestone bridge with a series of natural swimming holes fed by the waters of the Rio Cahabon.Sooooo much more compelling right now than studying for a Federal Courts exam.
One of the things we may be doing during the year is scouting out some potential sites for clinics based on the Primeros Pasos model. Once we have spent some time working at the clinic, this will involve traveling to a possible site and doing a general health needs assessment for the population. We would then try to determine which aspects of Primeros Pasos in Palajunoj would be a good fit for the new area. We have been asked to investigate Cancuen, which also happens to be the site of a major archaeological excavation -- they have uncovered one of the largest (if not the largest) palaces in the Mayan world.Beginning in August 2008, we will be working with Primeros Pasos, a clinic just outside of Quetzaltenango ("Xela"), in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Primeros Pasos, which opened in 2002, provides a variety of services to the rural population of the Palajunoj Valley, with a special focus on meeting the medical needs of the Valley's Mayan children.
Jimmy will be seeing patients, doing laboratory analysis, and undertaking a medical systems and quality review of the clinic. Kelsey will be the clinic's development coordinator, focusing on grant-writing and other fund-raising efforts, and will also contribute to the community education programming. Together, we will also be investigating potential sites for another clinic based on the Primeros Pasos model (which provides services to between 5,000 and 6,000 patients annually on a budget of $30,000).
