The Plan

Hi, friends/family/random strangers who stumble upon this blog...

We are getting pretty excited about the upcoming year! Above, you can see the city we will be living in come August: Quetzaltenango (pronounced kates-all-tay-NON-go), also known as Xela (pronounced SHAY-la-- much easier, huh?), Guatemala. Guatemala, for those of you who don't know, is the Central American country directly south of Mexico. You can brush up on your geography here. Xela is located in the Western Highlands of Guatemala, about 125 miles from Guatemala City, and is over 7,000 feet above sea level.

In addition to working at Primeros Pasos, a clinic just outside of Xela, we will be hiking, camping, soaking in hot springs, searching for monkeys, attending language school, learning to salsa dance, visiting ancient ruins, swimming in Lake Atitlan, and seeking out lots of other adventures. You should visit us!

Ahh - so bunny ears are the universal language (see the beginning of Video 2.) Kelsey and Jimmy: This looks like a wonderful place for you to devote your time and talents. I love the clinic's philosophy of involving even children in understanding their health issues, by letting them look through the microscopes.
I think I see a way Keeley and her new camera could volunteer but adding some video to the slides. My only Mommy worry: Is that an active volcano in the background?
Anyway, I certainly hope we can come see Quetzaltenango for ourselves, and we will talk about how we can support the work there.
Love,
Mom/Karen
